Learn to sculpt realistic heads!
Sculpture doesn’t have to be as intimidating as this guy! In this exciting weekend workshop, instructor Neil Grant (pictured, left) will teach you to sculpt realistic portraits in a series of easy steps. Using a model and other materials as reference, you’ll learn how to look at a person, simplify what you’re seeing, and sculpt a realistic likeness.
Using the Parking Lot Test* to establish the initial foundation of a sculpture, you’ll be led through a series of stages that add finer and finer levels of detail to the piece. At each stage, you’ll receive demonstrations and instruction before trying it yourself.
“Sculpting can be great fun but to get a realistic likeness, you need to learn a process. The aim of this workshop is to teach you that process in a series of logical steps. The atmosphere of the class is fun and friendly, but at the same time you’ll be learning solid techniques that you can take away with you,” says Neil.
The workshop takes place at Cotuit Center for the Arts on beautiful Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The model, clay, and sculpture stands are all included in the pricing. Tools will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own. Bring a bagged lunch and snacks for the day.
Saturday & Sunday, August 26 & 27
10:00 AM - 4:30 PM in the Art Studio, with a 45-minute break for lunch
*The Parking Lot Test: When you start a sculpture, before you add any details like eyes and ears, ask yourself, “Would I recognize my subject across the Parking Lot?" Remember, you won’t be able to see any of the details of their face if they're 30 yards away but you’d still recognize them. If it doesn’t look like your subject across the parking lot, then your foundation isn’t right and you need to work on it before doing anything else.
