Bonsai for the Novice

Combining art and horticulture is the living and ever-changing art of Bonsai. Akin to meditation, the art of Bonsai — working in partnership with another living thing to create beauty in its most natural form — is extremely rewarding. Co-teachers TJ Seguin and David Margaretos will provide Bonsai instruction tailored for novice and new learners. The only art that requires the full interest of two living beings of different species. Good for the mind and the soul. And a lot of fun!

Topics will include an overview of classic styles, how to select a tree, cleaning your tree to find it’s potential, choosing pots and tools, how to keep your tree thriving, and much more. A little botany, a little design, and a lot of hands-on work.

You'll be provided with a juniper or spruce, a pot, necessary soil, styling wire and a pair of Bonsai shears. Together we will take your tree from its raw natural form to an eye-catching statement of aged beauty.

There is a $50 materials fee payable to TJ at the first class.

Thomas J. Seguin is a Cape-based sculptor, Bonsai enthusiast, and retired engineer. A lover of trees, nature, and art, he is thrilled to be teaching the Center's first Bonsai classes and hopes to offer many more workshops.
