The Poly-Groove Records Revue: An Afternoon of Thump & Soul featuring The ZYG 808, Mwalim DaPhunkee Professor, Bishop The Shadowman, and Asa Petersand

‘The Sound of a Good Time!’

Poly-Groove Records and Cotuit Center for the Arts cordially invite you to the Poly-Groove Revue on November 4th for a tasty sampling of ‘The Sound of a Good Time!’ otherwise known as Thump & Soul, the music that has people dancing and listening at clubs, parties, and festivals throughout New England.

Born in a Mashpee basement around 2009 and spread throughout the East Coast, Thump & Soul is a mélange of funk, soul, rock, Afrobeat, and jazz originating from a loosely affiliated group of BIPOC artists and bands. The GroovaLottos, The Conspiracy of Noize, Urban Warriors Band, The ZYG 808, Asa Peters, Bishop the Shadowman, Mwalim DaPhunkee Professor, and Chops Turner, just to name a few. It was during the pandemic in 2020 when many of these artists began recording their work at Polyphonic Studios in Wareham, MA where it was noted that although the production team created a diverse array of genres (some of which are in circulation on national radio through mainstream artists), there was a consistency to the vibes and feelings of the music. It had a pulse and a groove, and it felt good! Adopting the term that The GroovaLottos applied to their indie soul-funk sound, a music movement was born.

Featured performers include: Percussionist/Vocalist/Songwriter/Producer, The ZYG 808 is a bit of a Swiss army knife as a musical artist. At twenty, he is already a two-time Grammy-nominated recording artist in the mediums of indie pop, afrobeats, and soul-jazz. Playing his first recording session at age 7 and headlining the Boston Jazz Fest at age 11 as a drummer, The ZYG 808 is the drummer and co-producer of The GroovaLottos, as well as a part of the Wamptronica dance music project.

Saxophonist/Composer/Producer Asa Peters is a creator of jazz and electronic dance music, or as he describes it, “wavy, fresh tunes…”. A noted festival artist and contributor to the Wamptronica dance music project.

Composer/Pianist/Vocalist/Producer Mwalim DaPhunkee Professor is a multi-award-winning performing artist and writer who scored international hits with his blends of jazz and house music, including the single “Her Groove” and the E.P. “Jazzy-Soul Club Grooves”. As a solo artist, as well as the keyboardist and a co-producer of The GroovaLottos, Mwalim has performed throughout the USA, Canada, the Caribbean, and the U.K. He is also a contributor to the Wamptronica dance music project.

In the spirit and tradition of Motown, Stax, and Daptone, we proudly present The Poly-Groove Revue!
