Watercolor and Sketching on Location

Nature columnist, artist, naturalist, and teacher, Mary Richmond, has been leading Watercolor and Sketching on Location all across the Cape for over 30 years. She is now partnering with the Cotuit Center for the Arts to share the joy of outdoor (or plein air) painting and drawing! Try just one class, or buy a 6-pack and pick and choose, or buy them all!

These classes are informal, and participants are encouraged to work independently as much as possible. All levels are welcome! Classes are aimed at those who want to sketch or use watercolor, but other mediums are welcome.
Each class will be held in a different, exciting location. Locations may be on the upper, mid, or lower Cape. Carpooling from the Center is always recommended, though not necessary if you live close to the destination. During inclement weather, students can work at the Schoolhouse on the CCftA campus.

Minimal supplies that are easy to carry and set up are recommended since some of the best spots are a bit off the beaten path. All efforts will be made to set up in an area that has a rest room somewhere in the vicinity, but that giant to-go coffee is not recommended. Bug spray may be appropriate in some areas as well. All outdoor classes will be held on Thursdays from 10am-12pm, but I recommend you get there 10-15 minutes early to set up.

Locations may change due to weather, traffic, or unforeseen circumstances. Online sign-ups end at 3:30 on the Wednesday before class, but if you decide last-minute to join us, just email me to sign up get the details at

Mary Richmond grew up on Cape Cod and has drawn and painted her way through life. Watercolor is her preferred medium. Today her work can be found on her website or in the many illustrations she does for various publications. She has taught watercolor for many years and loves helping her students make creative breakthroughs in their work. Her teaching style is casual and encouraging.

Our classes and workshops are open to students of all abilities and needs. We are currently unable to provide one-on-one instruction, though we will make every attempt to address accommodations for full and successful engagement whenever possible. If a student requires individual supports, parent/guardian/PCA/teacher/ABA Therapists/etc are welcome to attend. Please contact Christine Ernst, Director of Education, for more information at
