Summer Classes at Cotuit Center for the Arts

Cotuit Center for the Arts is offering a range of classes and workshops for all ages and interests this summer. Here are two examples.

Master printmaker Alice Galick is teaching a three-day Collagraph and Monoprint Workshop July 26 through July 28, in the newly renovated Schoolhouse building. Hours are 9 AM to 4 PM on Friday and Saturday and 11 AM to 4 PM on Sunday. The class is for all levels, from beginner to experienced printmaker, and limited to eight participants.

Collagraphy is a printmaking process in which materials are applied to a rigid substrate such as paperboard or wood. The word “collagraph” is derived from the Greek word koll or kola, meaning glue, and graph, meaning drawing.

Participants will create a collagraph plate and make a variety of richly colored monoprints from the plate on soft, velvety paper passed through the press.

Most supplies are provided; paper is available for purchase by the sheet from the instructor. Students are asked to bring a lunch or snack, as well as some supplies, which are listed on the CCftA class website. The workshop fee is $285, $238 for members.

Veteran Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus performer Jay Steward will teach a two-day Comedy and Circus Skills Workshop on Wednesday and Thursday, August 1 to 2 and August 8 to 9. Students age 13 and up—including adults—may attend one workshop or both. The workshops take place from 5 to 8 PM in the Art Studio and on the Studio lawn.

Stewart describes the workshop as “ridiculously fun.” He will teach physical comedy techniques, classic gags, circus skills, and variety arts. “Put some circus in your life and come be a kid again,” said Stewart.

Students are asked to dress to move and to bring water and bug spray. The class fee is $100. $85 for members.
