ROLES
All roles listed are open and available to any race/ethnicity and gender identity. Character ages indicated in descriptions below are illustrative of their apparent and relative ages, not the age of the performers.

CON: Young writer, play’s protagonist and his own antagonist. Fueled with an anger that is usually righteous but not always right. Desperately in love with Nina. Character is in his mid 20’s-early 30’s.

NINA: Aspiring actress who wants desperately to be adored, just not necessarily in the way Con can provide. Falls for the talented and famous Trigorin. Character is in her early to late 20’s.

MASH: Can sing and bake and do pretty much anything you ask except be Nina, which is the one thing Con, who Mash desperately pines for, wants. Character sings several songs in show, ability to play guitar or ukulele a plus. Character is in her mid 20’s-early 30’s.

DEV: Friend of Con, observer of the action of the play. Uncomplicated desires: eat well and marry Mash, with whom he is desperately in love.

EMMA: Con’s mother, and a successful actress technically past her prime but still full of vim and vigor. Has little respect for Con’s artistic aspirations. Desperately trying to keep Trigorin from straying, to mixed success. Character is in her mid 40’s-early 60’s.

TRIGORIN: Emma’s paramour, an acclaimed writer. Despised by Con, only kind of deserves it. Desperate for life and inspiration, goes looking in the wrong places. Character is in his early 50’s-mid 60’s.

SORN: Emma’s brother and Con’s uncle. A doctor unsure of his place in the world and the narrative. Desperately looking for something to feel desperate about. Character is in his early 50’s-late 60’s.

SIDES

Please prepare one monologue for a character you are interested in performing. Physical copies of the sides will be provided at the audition. Memorization is not necessary. You will be asked to read the part once, then again with some direction.
