Cotuit Center for the Arts’ 2nd Wednesday Theater presents a staged reading of “She Kills Monsters,” by Qui Nguyen, on Wednesday, July 10, at 7:30 PM on the main stage. The play is presented by Matt Kohler and the New Classics Theater Company. Admission is free.
Agnes Evans is a young woman grieving for her deceased teenaged sister, Tilly. As she leaves her childhood home in Ohio, Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook containing a game scenario created by her sister, whom she realizes she never really knew very well at all. She discovers that Tilly was a renowned D&D player who was passionate about online fantasy gaming.
In order to unlock more secrets about her mysterious younger sibling, Agnes recruits a dungeon master named Chuck to help her understand and grieve for Tilly. She soon stumbles into a journey of self-discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s safe haven.
Dramatic and comedic, and as full of ogres, elves and fantasy creatures as any episode of “Game of Thrones,” "She Kills Monsters" is a surprisingly sweet tale of friendship, loss, and acceptance and an acknowledgement of the geek within us all.
When the play opened in New York in 2011, The New York Times wrote that it was "deceptively breezy and rather ingenious. The whole enterprise is kind of dopey and kind of invigorating and kind of remarkable. It will slash and shapeshift its way into your heart."
The Chicago Tribune also praised the show: “Nguyen is a refreshing, break-the-rules writer —he has a ready embrace of pop culture, high-school speak and 'High Fidelity' cool, and he also has a mission to redeem gaming geeks everywhere.... ’She Kills Monsters’ delivers exactly what it promises, [and] is generally a blast.”
The New Classics Company is just the right company to stage this play. Established in Hyannis in 2013, New Classis is committed to bringing full-length original plays, improv comedy shows, local music, play festivals, education workshops, staged readings, and many other free events to the Cape Cod community.
Second Wednesday Theater is a monthly play-reading series of rarely performed classics, undiscovered gems, old chestnuts, and exciting new works. Admission is free, and wine is available for $5 a glass.
Cotuit Center for the Arts is at 4404 Route 28 in Cotuit. For more information, visit www.artsonthecape.org or call 508-428-0669.
