2nd Wednesday Theater Presents “The Sherlock Problem” at Cotuit Center for the Arts

Cotuit Center for the Arts’ 2nd Wednesday Theater presents a staged reading of Susan Lumenello’s new comedy, “The Sherlock Problem,” at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, November 13. The production is directed by Sue Lindholm. Admission is free.

Arthur Conan Doyle has a problem: the great detective Sherlock Holmes, the world’s most famous, most beloved character.

At first, Arthur brims with excitement over Sherlock’s arrival. The young doctor and would-be author hopes his brainchild will bring him recognition and rescue him from a dull, unprofitable medical practice. That’s exactly what Sherlock does.

But things change. The Sherlock stories prove wildly successful, beyond even Arthur’s expectations. So famous does Sherlock become that he outshines his creator, and the demand for more stories grows and grows. Arthur comes to hate Sherlock. And so, with pen in hand, he does something about it.

Cast members are Phillip Scudder as Arthur Conan Doyle, Geoff Newton as Sherlock Holmes, Ken Chisholm as Watson, Carole McManus as Mrs. Burke, and Mary Chris Kenney as the Publisher. Kelly Bennet will host and read stage directions.

Playwright Susan Lumenello said, “The Sherlock canon has been well-tried for a reason–Holmes is a fascinating character. But the fraught and complicated relationship between Arthur Conan Doyle and his signature creation has never been fully explored.”

Susan Lumenello was raised in South Yarmouth and now lives in Boston. Her one-act play “Buzz” was performed at the Boston Theater Marathon; her one-act “The Annoying Minstrels” was performed at the Cotuit Center for the Arts; her full-length comedy “Easy to Love” was given a staged reading at the Provincetown Theatre; and “Dreamsville,” a full-length play, had a staged reading at the Barnstable Comedy Club this past August.

Second Wednesday Theater is a monthly play-reading series of rarely performed classics, undiscovered gems, old chestnuts, and exciting new works. Admission is free, and refreshments are available.

Cotuit Center for the Arts is at 4404 Route 28 in Cotuit. For more information, visit www.artsonthecape.org or call 508-428-0669.
