Lisa Jason By Chris Carroll 13312 1

Cotuit Center for the Arts presents “Lisa Jason: Bullied to Beautiful” on Tuesday, August 28, at 7:30 PM. After being performed in New York City for the past three years, CCftA is bringing this important show and subject matter to its audience.

This is just one story, out of so many that continue to be told. Lisa grew up in a small town in Massachusetts, and was bullied relentlessly, until she left at the age of seventeen and moved to New York City with dreams of becoming a professional dancer. Her story is painted by a musical backdrop of songs from the nineteen seventies, original songs written by Jason and other contributing songwriters, as well as songs that help to touch the listener to remember their own journey. With wit and wisdom, Bullied to Beautiful strives to entertain, educate and hopes to inspire us all to continue to use our voices for those who may not have one. For Lisa, it was her collection of 45 records and the artists on them that helped lift her up and not feel so alone while dealing with feelings of shame, humiliation and fear. These days, bullying has become even more of an epidemic with the new advances in technology and social media which have added new and dire consequences to this issue. This is a show for the whole family.

The beautiful and haunting arrangements written by International Musical Director and Maestro, Ryan Shirar, carry this story with love, intensity and humor. Lisa is supported by her accomplished and soulful musicians from New York City, Sean Harkness on Guitar, Peter Sachon on Cello, and from Nashville, Los Angeles and Cape Cod, John Connelly on Cajon and Percussion. Mr. Connelly is also a contributing songwriter to the score.

This is a journey through childhood and back, not many of us would take again. The true mission of this show is not point fingers, but to create understanding and community as we celebrate how unique we all are, because we are all, beautiful.

Lisa Jason has been called “funny, incredibly engaging…and able to wring all the emotion out of every note” of the songs she sings. A multi-talented singer, songwriter, performer, writer, and producer, she has recorded three albums including both original songs and collaborations with other songwriters. She has been a guest artist with such legendary groups as Huey Lewis and the News, KC and the Sunshine Band, Otis Day and the Nights, The Hooters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the original cast of “The Jersey Boys.”

Tickets are $32, $27 for balcony seating. There is a $5 discount for members and a $2 discount for seniors and veterans.
