Cotuit Center for the Arts presents “Samba Saturday on Cape Cod: An Evening of Jobim” on Saturday, August 4, at 7:30 PM.

Internationally acclaimed pianist and composer Fabiano de Castro returns to the Cape from Sao Paulo, Brazil for this one-night-only event. De Castro is known for his original Brazilian music and his renditions of the music of Antônio Carlos Jobim and other Brazilian jazz composers.

A staple in the jazz community of Sao Paulo, de Castro is also a regular performer in concerts and festivals throughout Brazil. The winner of the New Talent of Jazz award in 2013, he has released two CDs, appeared on others' CDs, and performed throughout Brazil and North America.

Ron Ormsby, who has been playing Brazilian music since 1988, will be featured on the bass. His thorough understanding of Jobim will make this an entertaining and informative evening. Bart Weisman on percussion and Bruce Abbott on saxophones and flute round out this extraordinary instrumental quartet.

Popular Cape Cod entertainer Tedi Marsh is featured on vocals. Last year she and the same instrumentalists paid tribute to Michel LeGrand. This is their return engagement to honor Jobim, another exceptional composer, pianist, songwriter, arranger and singer.

The evening will include well-known and hidden treasures by Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim, also known as Tom Jobim. Widely considered as one of the great exponents of Brazilian music, Jobim brought bossa nova to the international stage and, with the help of important American artists, merged it with jazz in the 1960s to create a new sound that has had remarkable popular success.

Brazilian collaborators and interpreters of Jobim's music include Vinicius de Moraes, João Gilberto (often credited as a co-creator or creator of bossa nova), Chico Buarque, Gal Costa, Elis Regina, Sérgio Mendes, Astrud Gilberto and Flora Purim. Eumir Deodato and conductor/composer Claus Ogerman arranged many recordings of Jobim tunes.

Tickets are $35, $30 for balcony seating. There is a $5 discount for members and a $2 discount for seniors and veterans.
