Press Release: Summer Family Fun Classes at Cotuit Center for the Arts

Jun. 11, 2018 / Press Release

Cotuit Center for the Arts is offering a range of classes and workshops to entertain and educate children, teens and families this summer. Here are three classes for those interested in exploring drama, art, and music.

At Camp Shakespeare, instructor Ed O’Toole offers a fun and rollicking two-week class that culminates in a one-hour junior production featuring the bard’s most famous comic scene. Participants will study and rehearse the text in the same way Shakespeare’s own actors would have, allowing them to unpack the language to explore plot and motive.

At the end of the two weeks, family and friends are invited to the show—produced, directed, and acted by the students. The class runs Monday through Friday, July 9 to 20, 9 AM to noon. The performance is Friday, July 20, at 11 AM.

Creating Art from Nature is taught by accomplished illustrator and Cape Cod native Maddie Edgar. Using natural materials and objects as inspiration and even as building components, students will incorporate what they see around them in the natural world into their own unique works of art.

Students will create at least three works of art and a nature journal that they may continue working on in the future. The class runs Monday through Friday, July 9 to 20, from 2:30 to 4:30 PM.

Entrain member Sam Holmstock will teach Drum Fun with Sam, a class for adults, kids, and teens. Participants will learn the traditional rhythms of Cuba, West Africa, and Brazil and have the opportunity to play in an ensemble setting. Shekere (bead-covered gourd), bells, and many Brazilian ancillary instruments will be used.

Students will explore the use of percussion as ritual, communication, and recreation, and learn about drum circles for fun and relaxation. No experience is necessary, and drums will be provided for those who don’t have them. Classes run Thursdays, 1 to 3 PM, from July 12 to 26.
